Septic Care and Maintenance

Our SepticSmart Kit and Brochure provide basic information on septic system care and maintenance. Use the information in the kit to keep your system working properly for years to come. Attend a SepticSmart workshop for a printed kit.

Locate your septic system

Caring for your system starts with knowing where it is. If you do not have a copy of your onsite sewage disposal system site plan, you may be able to get a copy by contacting your local Island Health office.

Repairing a Malfunctioning System

If you suspect your system is not operating properly:
  • contact an Authorized Person to assess potential problems and solutions
  • have the tank pumped out
  • conserve water in your home
Depending on the problem, an Authorized Person may (temporarily) convert your septic tank to a holding tank while repairs are under way. In this case, you may apply to the RDN for a reduction in septage disposal fees. A temporary rate of $0.01 per Imperial gallon is available to eligible applicants for up to 90 days.
