The construction gates came down and the park opened to the public on February 1st, 2014. The youth have waited a long time for this park (over 10 years) and thanks to community support and the determination of the Cedar Skate Park Association the park is now a reality. Way to go!

Construction Progress

Where is the park?

The park is located in the south eastern corner of the Cedar Community Secondary School property, off of Walsh Road.

What does the park look like?

A 930 sq.m. (10,010 sq.ft.) concrete, cast in place skatepark with obstacles and features that will satisfy all styles of riders and that both beginners as well as experienced riders can enjoy. The park is designed to accommodate approximately 40-50 users.

Park Funding

Total project costs were originally estimated to be $625,000. The final cost of the project has come in at $589,000 and now includes a parking lot which was not within the original scope of the project. The Province of BC, through the Community Recreation Grant (2012) contributed $439,410; the Regional District of Nanaimo contributed $99,500 and the local Cedar Community fundraised and contributed $50,000 towards the project, including an extra $2,500 which was recently donated to the project by Bedrock Redi-Mix Ltd., a local business who provided the concrete for the project.

Planning Timeline

  • 2000 - The process of planning and developing a skatepark in Cedar has been ongoing for a number of years as a community driven initiative.

  • 2004 - the Cedar Skateboard Association (CSA) was formed to provide a more focused and formal effort. In the same year the association approached the Regional District to help advance the development of the park.

  • 2009 - a consultation team specializing in the design and construction of skateparks was retained by the Regional District to develop concept designs and to determine the project's costs. From February 2009 to April of the same year the New Line Skateparks Inc. and RDN Parks staff held various meetings with the community, reviewed the School District property and created conceptual designs of the park. Click here to see the Concept Design summary report.

  • 2012 - the RDN secured the funding to proceed with the construction of the skatepark.

  • 2013 - the RDN secured a lease from School District 68 for the skatepark site and associated parking area.

  • 2013 (September) – construction begins

  • 2014 (February) – park open
