COLLABORATIVE PROCESS PLANNED FOR FUTURE AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT

The Regional District of Nanaimo has obtained a legal opinion regarding local government jurisdiction as it pertains to the Nanaimo Airport.

"The legal opinion we received states that Airport lands and aeronautic-related land use is excluded from local government jurisdiction," said Electoral Area A Director Joe Burnett. "Although the airport lands are located within Electoral Area A, the Regional District of Nanaimo's Official Community Plan and zoning bylaws do not apply to airport lands as they relate to airside runway and the terminal, or groundside ancillary airport development."

The Regional District of Nanaimo Board of Directors has offered to assist the Nanaimo Airport Commission in developing a public information framework for future airport development to ensure that the public is engaged in the process. The Board is committed to working with the Commission to achieve this objective.

"The Nanaimo Airport Commission recognizes the importance of working with local government and participating in a public information process," said Mike Hooper, President and CEO of the Nanaimo Airport. "We have held numerous public presentations to local government, conducted a well-attended public open house in June, and we are planning more meetings for the public in the fall. We will be in close contact with the Regional District of Nanaimo on an ongoing basis."
