An elected Board of 17 Directors governs the Regional District of Nanaimo. Seven members represent the City of Nanaimo. One member represents the City of Parksville, another member represents the Town of Qualicum Beach and another member represents the District of Lantzville. The remaining seven members represent the electoral areas that make up the District's rural communities.
Joe Stanhope, Electoral Area ‘G’ Director is the RDN Board Chairperson, and Larry McNabb, City of Nanaimo Councillor, is the Deputy RDN Board Chairperson.

The RDN Board has two standing committees - The Electoral Area Planning Committee and The Committee of the Whole. The Board and its Standing Committees meet regularly to govern the affairs of the District and to establish local bylaws and public policy.
