The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has started to develop a management plan for Gabriola Island's 707 Acre Community Park. The park is situated along the northern central spine of Gabriola Island and includes the island's highest point of land. The park's western slopes provide views across the water towards Nanaimo and Mount Benson.
What's Next?
- Draft Plan Review: A draft 707 Community Park Management Plan is now available for public review. Hard copies of the draft plan are available on Gabriola Island at the Islands Trust office and the Public Library. Please provide your feedback on the draft plan by Friday, July 16, 2010. Feedback Forms can be completed at both the Islands Trust office and the Public Library. Feedback can also be given directly to Lesya Fesiak, RDN Parks Planner, by emailing lfesiak@rdn.bc.ca or by calling 1-888-828-2069.
- Public Open House: Two Public Open House Sessions to review a draft Management Plan for the 707 Community Park will be held on Saturday, June 26 at 10am-12pm and at 1pm-3pm in the Women's Institute Hall on Gabriola Island.
The management plan will identify a long-term vision for the Park and will develop policies and short-term actions for 2010-2020 which will help guide park development.
The process of developing the plan will occur in three phases between January to December 2009 and will include four public sessions.
- Phase One:
we will be collecting background information on the park's natural, resource, recreation and cultural values. We will also be seeking public input on the vision and long-term goals for the park.
- Phase Two:
a draft plan will be created and presented to the public for review and input in the fall.
- Phase Three:
the plan will be prepared and is scheduled to be completed by July 2010.
