Engineering Services
The Engineering department operates under the umbrella of RDN Environmental Services. Engineering is responsible for the design and construction of major project within the RDN.
Barclay Crescent Sewer Initiative
The Barclay Crescent Sewer Initiative is now underway and should be complete by April 30, 2006.
Arrowsmith Water Service
In 1997 construction began on a dam at Arrowsmith Lake, designed to provide a long term, reliable source of water to Nanoose Bay, Parksville, French Creek, and Qualicum Beach. By November 1998, physical work on the dam, a project costing $4.7 million,
was essentially completed.
The Arrowsmith Lake Dam - at the headwaters of the Englishman River - will turn the lake into a kind of reservoir. It will store heavy fall and winter rainfall and spring snow melt for release into the Englishman River during low river flow and peak summer demand.
The Arrowsmith Water Service operates the Arrowsmith Lake dam and is a partnership between the RDN, the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach. The City of Parksville, which has an intake on the Englishman River, will be the first partner to benefit from the Arrowsmith dam project.
Because of the additional water available for release from Arrowsmith Lake, Parksville will be able to draw additional water from the Englishman River during dry summer months. A future step would be connecting the RDN's water utilities with Parksville's system. When necessary, the RDN's French Creek Water Utility and the Town of Qualicum Beach would connect to the system.
