On Saturday, November 1, residents of the Regional District of Nanaimo's Electoral 'B' (Gabriola Island and the Flat Top Islands, Mudge and DeCourcy Islands) will vote in a referendum to establish an emergency evacuation wharf at Descanso Bay.
The RDN Board approved the Electoral Area 'B' Descanso Bay Wharf Service referendum question on September 9, 2003. Voters will be asked if they are in favour of a bylaw that will create a service for the establishment, construction, operation, and maintenance of the wharf facility in Electoral Area B (Gabriola Island).
The proposed emergency wharf at Descanso Bay will provide a facility that the BC Ambulance Service can access after BC Ferries' service normal operating hours. The emergency wharf will also provide Gabriola Island with a backup facility for emergency transportation in the event BC Ferries' experiences a service breakdown.
An information brochure on the Emergency Wharf Facility Referendum will be distributed to all Electoral Area 'B' residents and property owners via Canada Post admail during the week commencing October 6, 2003.
The referendum information brochure will provide detailed information on the referendum question, costs and benefits, voting qualification, and voting day and advanced voting opportunities. Residents should also watch for referendum ads in the local newspapers, and updates on the RDN Website at www.rdn.bc.ca
General voting for the 2003 Descanso Bay Emergency Wharf Referendum is 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2003 at the Gabriola Island Elementary School. Advance Voting will be held 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., October 22, 2003 and October 29, 2003 at the Gabriola Island Elementary School Library located at 680 North Road.
