The Regional District of Nanaimo has completed preliminary land assessments and design work for two planned multi-use bridges (for pedestrian, cyclist, wheelchair and equestrian use) over the Nanaimo River within the Morden Colliery Regional Trail (MCRT) corridor. A feasibility study, completed by Herold Engineering in September 2014, was approved by the Regional Board on October 8, 2014 at which time a resolution was carried to proceed with design development for two steel-truss bridges.
A multi-use crossing over the Nanaimo River within the MCRT has been noted as a priority item in several RDN planning documents as well as active transportation studies, including the Area 'A' Community Trails Study (2001), the Regional Parks and Trails Plan (2005).
A Public Survey was available at the Open House and online from December 1, 2015 to February 1, 2016. Thank you to everyone who participated.
