Recruitment Process

The RDN Transportation Services Department has an extensive recruitment process for casual Transit and HandyDART driver positions. Drivers face a variety of new situations daily, so it's important that the RDN selects the right people to represent the RDN and to serve our community. The recruitment process in place enables the RDN to identify a very specific skill set required for this position.

1. Application
Individuals interested in employment as a casual Serviceperson/Driver can submit a resume with a five year driver's abstract and a true copy of a valid Class 2 driver's license with airbrake endorsement. For more information on how to apply, please click here.

2. Oral Interview
Resumes that are received are carefully reviewed and those who meet the minimum qualifications will be shortlisted for an oral interview. In the oral interview, applicants will be asked a series of questions to test their knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to the position.

3. Training Assessment
Applicants who are successful in the oral interview, will be invited back for a training assessment. For the training assessment, applicants will spend time with a Transit Trainer who will assess an applicant's ability to be trained to the acceptable standard for the job. This includes a comprehensive road test and performing a pre-trip inspection.

4. Reference Check
Reference checks will be completed for those applicants who meet the requirements of the training assessment. A minimum of three references is required and must be persons who have supervised the applicant in the past. When contacted, the references will be asked to verify employment, work performance and work history.

5. Criminal Record Check
Applicants may be asked to obtain a Criminal Record Check. Though a criminal record is not necessarily a bar to employment, one that is directly related to the position may result in the loss of an employment opportunity.

6. Medical Examination
The final step of the recruitment process includes the successful completion of a medical examination that is based on the British Columbia Medical Association's "Guide for Physicians in Determining Fitness to Drive a Motor Vehicle". The main purpose of the examination is to ensure that applicants are placed in work for which they are physically and emotionally suited for and to ensure applicants are able to meet the medical standards required for the class of license to do the job.

7. Offer of Employment
Initially, a conditional offer of employment as a casual driver is made to successful applicants who must successfully complete the training period. After successful completion of the training period, the applicant is confirmed as a casual driver for the RDN.
