The State of Sustainability Project was initiated in 2004 with the aim of:
assessing the region's progress towards sustainability;
making residents aware of the region's progress towards sustainability; and
providing more and better opportunities to involve residents of the region in the assessment.
The project involved in depth collection of data on a variety of indicators to measure progress towards regional sustainability beyond those areas influenced only by RGS policies. This resulted in the seventh RGS annual progress report (2006 State of Sustainability Report) being a detailed technical document that attempted to measure sustainability of the region more broadly. This was followed by a subsequent report providing recommendations for a sustainable future based on the findings of progress report.
