Improved Internet Coming to Spider Lake Area in 2017

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) in partnership the Federal Government and TELUS is helping bring improved internet connectivity to the Spider Lake area in 2017. Spider Lake residents can expect to see installation work beginning this month throughout their community.

"Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, communities across British Columbia and the rest of Canada can direct federal funding towards important infrastructure projects that address the most pressing needs of local residents and businesses. I am very pleased that this funding is going towards the installation of faster internet in Spider Lake, an integral part of ensuring long-term personal and economic growth for the community." Jati Sidhu, Member of Parliament, on behalf of the Honorable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.

"People rely on high-quality internet connectivity to keep in touch with their families, run their businesses and access vital services," said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "The improvements to Spider Lake's network will make a difference in the everyday lives of the people living in and visiting the region."

"The federal Gas Tax Fund provides local governments with the ability to direct federal funding to local priorities," said Union of B.C. Municipalities president Wendy Booth. "I am pleased to see the RDN strengthening connectivity for Spider Lake residents through this program."

Focusing on the Region's economic health is an important strategic priority for the RDN. Working with partners to bring reliable and faster internet services is both good for the residents in their homes and for businesses.

"We are appreciative of the federal Gas Tax Funds received that will help bring improved technology to the Spider Lake area," Chairperson Veenhof shared. "We are pleased with our recent success using a share of the funds received by the Regional District to collaboratively improve services and connectivity in our Region. The collaborative relationship we have had with TELUS on this initiative has been exceptional."
