Bike & Ride

Bike Bus Leave the pedaling to us! Whether you’re headed for work, to school, shopping or just out for fun, you and your bike can ride the same bus for the regular fare. All accessible buses are equipped with bike racks.

Loading and unloading bikes on the rack is easy and there is no extra cost for bringing your bike.

The rack, attached to the front of the bus, holds two bicycles. The racks have simple instructions posted right on them.

Each bike can be loaded or unloaded independently. You don’t need to move one bike to reach the other. The rack holds most wheel and frame sizes.

Can I Try One Out?

Request a Stop

Request a Stop Request a Stop is a special service available to passengers after 9 p.m. on all Regional Transit buses. With Request a Stop, passengers who are worried about their personal safety can ask their transit driver to stop between regular bus stops.

Simply ask your driver at least one stop ahead of where you wish to get off. Your transit driver will let you off as close to your request as safely possible. For added safety and security, Request a Stop users are asked to leave by the front doors.

For safety reasons, passengers using wheelchairs must use designated wheelchair accessible bus stops.

Bus Stops in Rural Areas

Bus stop People In rural areas where there are no designated bus stops, the buses can be flagged to stop by riders. When you want to catch the bus, find a safe location along the route and wave the bus down.

A safe location is one where visibility is good and where the bus can easily pull off the road, such as a driveway or postal box area. Ensure you are visible, especially at night. Carry a flashlight or stand in a well-lit area. To get off the bus, ask the driver to find a safe place to stop.

Baby Strollers

Baby Stroller Passengers travelling with youngsters in strollers now have easier access to on low floor accessible buses. The stroller can be wheeled on the bus with the child in the stroller. When planning your trip be sure to check if the bus you plan to take is a Low Floor Accessible Bus. These buses are much easier to board. Once on board, the passenger can:

1) Remove the child from the stroller, collapse the stroller and store clear of the aisles between the seats, OR

2) Allow the child to remain in the stroller and position the stroller in an unoccupied wheelchair location. The stroller’s brakes should be set, but the restraining straps are not required. The parent or guardian is responsible for the stroller and child during the trip and is required to hold onto the stroller at all times.

Mobility aid spots on the buses are used on a first come first served basis; however the driver may ask you to collapse your stroller, hold your child and keep the stroller out of the aisle if you have a collapsable stroller. If you have a grocery buggy, you may be asked to change your spot to allow for a mobility aid or a stroller to access the spot at the front of the bus.

The McGruff House Program is similar to the Block Parent Program. Each bus is radio equipped with contact to local police, ambulance and other emergency services. Regional Transit’s drivers are well trained to assist a child or adult in difficulty. If you need help just ask your transit driver.

Kids Ride Free

Families – Take advantage of the Kids Ride Free Travel Program!

Parents, family members or guardians can bring two children (age 14 and younger) on board for free travel between 5 p.m., Friday to the end of service Sunday. The accompanying adult simply pays regular fare or shows his or her monthly or day pass and the kids ride for free! The Kids Rid Free is available on Parksville and Qualicum Beach routes from 5 p.m., Friday until the end of service on Saturday.

Pets on Transit

Pets on Transit Pets on Board is a program to welcome pets on the transit bus.

To help ensure the success of this program, please follow these guidelines:

  • Only small fur-bearing and feathered pets contained in secure, clean, handheld cages are permitted on the buses.
  • The cage should be appropriate to the pet's size.
  • Cages must be small enough to fit on the owner's lap.
  • One handheld cage per passenger.
  • Passengers must hold onto their cages at all times and are responsible for the safety of their pets. If there is room on the bus, you can place the cage beside you on the floor. The cage should not block the aisle or restrict other passengers.
  • Your transit driver may refuse a trip if your pet poses a health or safety risk, or if it misbehaves.
  • When the bus is busy, there may not be room for your pet. Call transit and ask which trips tend to be busy.
Certified assistance animals may continue to use public transit as always. Owners of assistance animals should be prepared to show the animal's verification of training.
