Irrigation Efficiency and Soil Improvements

This program was created to help residents conserve water outdoors by improving the water efficiency of automated irrigation systems or by improving the water-holding capacity of soil. Up to $675 per residential property is available to help offset the cost of landscape upgrades to improve water efficiency.

These rebates are available on a first come, first served basis. Once funds are exhausted, the program will be finished for the calendar year. There is a limit of one rebate per property for the lifetime of the program.

Eligibility and Regulations

Who is Eligible

Residential property owners within the Regional District of Nanaimo and member municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville and Qualicum Beach who are planning to improve the water efficiency of existing in-ground automatic irrigation systems and established landscape soils.

Rules and Regulations

Participants must be residents of the Regional District of Nanaimo, the rebate work must be completed within 4 months of receiving pre-approval confirmation, and the following requirements must be met: Irrigation Efficiency Improvements - Requirements:
  • Irrigation system upgrades must be completed by an irrigation professional certified by the Irrigation Industry Association of BC (IIABC). To locate IIABC certified irrigation professionals in the RDN, refer to www.irrigationbc.com -click on "Find a Certified Professional Here" and search by Classification ("Technician") and Area ("Vancouver Island/Coast").
  • Itemized / detailed receipts are required.
Soil Improvement - Requirements
  • For garden beds, approximately 2 inches (50mm) of topsoil, mulch, or compost is the required depth to be added.
  • For topdressing lawns, approximately ΒΌ inch (6mm) of soil or compost is the required depth to be added.
  • The garden / landscape area to be amended must be at least 400 square feet (~37m2)

How to Participate

There are 2 parts to participating in the rebate process:

Part 1 - Plan and Apply
  1. Plan your upgrades
  2. Take before photos of the garden area you plan to improve, or irrigation system components you wish to upgrade
    • Photos should have an indication of scale (e.g. a person, landscape tie, meter stick, ruler, etc.)
  3. Complete and submit the Pre-Approval application with detailed description of your planned upgrades and your before photos.
Applications can be emailed to waterprotection@rdn.bc.ca, mailed or dropped off to the RDN Administration office at 6300 Hammond Bay Rd., Nanaimo, B.C. V9T 6N2, or faxed to 250-390-1542.

We will review all applications. Applicants who are selected to participate in the rebate program will be contacted with confirmation and information on how to proceed to Part 2.

Eligible and pre-approved participants will proceed with the second part of the process.

Part 2 - Complete and Confirm
  1. Complete your planned and approved upgrades (irrigation upgrades must be completed by an IIABC certified irrigation professional).
  2. Obtain detailed / itemized receipts
  3. Take after photos of the garden area you have improved, or new irrigation system components
  4. Complete and submit the Claim forms along with your after photos and receipt(s)
We will process the rebate when all completed documentation is received.
