RDN Strategic Plan 2019-2022 Approved

On May 28, 2019, the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Board of Directors approved the RDN Strategic Plan for 2019 to 2022. After a two-month review process that included community consultation, the plan has been amended to incorporate public input and has been approved for implementation.

“The valuable feedback we received from residents during the consultation process helped us shape our goals to reflect the wishes of the community,” said Chair Ian Thorpe. “Now that the Strategic Plan has been approved, it will guide our efforts in building a prosperous and sustainable future together with the communities we serve.”

“The social well-being of our residents is a priority for our current Board of Directors, and this plan will help us evaluate the way ahead for parks and trails in the Region,” said Chair Ian Thorpe. “Prioritizing sustainable practices for the management, acquisition, and servicing of our parks and trails will help to enact the RDN’s goal of making the region a safe and vibrant place for all.”

The Strategic Plan includes the Board’s vision, mission, and goals, and it will serve as the basis for directing policy and regulatory decisions as well as driving RDN staff in the delivery of plans, projects, and services. The vision is for the region is to protect natural assets, respect diverse communities and enhance the well-being of all residents. Based on these themes, the Strategic Plan covers eight key strategic areas:

  • Climate Change: lead adaptation and mitigation efforts with a goal of net zero by 2032;
  • Environmental Stewardship: protect and enhance the natural environment including land, water, and air for future generations;
  • Housing: promote affordable housing for residents;
  • Growth Management: provide effective planning and management for physical infrastructure and natural assets;
  • Transportation and Transit: provide means for residents to move effectively through and around the region;
  • Economic Coordination: enable diverse economic opportunities across the region;
  • People and Partnerships: improve governance and awareness of RDN activities; and
  • Social Well-Being: make the region a safe and vibrant place for all with a focus on children and families in planning and programs.
