The department oversees selection & recruitment, training and development, and compensation and benefits administration services for all employees of the District.

 

Equipment Operator (x2)

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo Solid Waste Services is looking to hire two (2) casual Equipment Operators to work at the Regional Landfill in Cedar and the Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville.

The Equipment Operators contribute to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities through the skilled operation of machinery to ensure that the Regional Landfill and Transfer Station are efficiently utilized. This position supports the Solid Waste Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma plus Heavy Equipment Operator Trades Program Certificate with two (2) years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of landfill operations is an asset.

Possession of a valid Class 3 BC Drivers License with Air Brake Endorsement, Survival First Aid course, working knowledge of WHMIS regulations and procedures, knowledge of safe work and operation procedures, and good judgement with manual dexterity skills.

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual Union positions. The (2024) hourly rate of pay is $32.10 to $33.79. Hours of work vary, and weekend work is required. As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Emergency Planning Coordinator

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a temporary full-time Emergency Planning Coordinator working with the Emergency Services Team.

The Emergency Planning Coordinator is responsible for supporting, coordinating and facilitating of emergency management activities in the Emergency Services department for the Regional District of Nanaimo. 

QUALIFICATIONS
An undergraduate degree in emergency management, business administration or related field, plus three (3) years experience preferably in a local government setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certificate in Local Government Administration, courses in emergency management and Incident Command System training would be strong assets, along with experience with volunteer recruitment and effective volunteer program management.

Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required and must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet operational requirements including weekends and evenings as necessary.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a temporary full-time Union position until July 11, 2025, providing 35 hours per week, with the possibility of ending early or of extension based on the operational needs of the department. The (2024) rate of pay is $36.27 to $38.18 per hour. The successful incumbent will be entitled to 12.4% in lieu of benefits, as provided for in the Collective Agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Senior Business Solutions Specialist

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for Senior business Solutions Specialist in the Information Services and GIS Department.

The Senior Business Solutions Specialist performs a leadership role in business solutions delivery, technology project management, business analysis, change management integration development, reporting and business intelligence.

This role has organization-wide impact, assisting internal clients with business process review and gap analysis, improving the quality and efficiency of corporate decision-making through data integrations, business intelligence and reporting, and ensuring operational effectiveness through optimal implementation, improvement, and sustainment of enterprise business systems.  The incumbent plays a key role in interfacing between business areas and their technology goals and establishes relationships to support this.

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a post-secondary degree in computer science, information systems or related field.  Eight years professional experience in relevant technical roles, such as business solutions implementation and sustainment. Three years professional experience and documented results in formal business analysis and/or project management. Documented training in business analysis, project management, change management, and technical platforms, with certifications considered an asset.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time Union position (35 hours per week). The (2024) rate of pay is $48.08 to $50.62 per hour. Business Solutions Specialist

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for Business Solutions Specialist in the Information Services and GIS Department.

Reporting to the IT Project Manager, the Business Solutions Specialist performs technology project management, business analysis, integration development and sustainment, reporting and business intelligence.

This role has an organization-wide impact, assisting internal clients with business process review and gap analysis, improving the quality and efficiency of corporate decision-making through data integrations, business intelligence and reporting, and ensuring operational effectiveness through optimal Implementation, improvement, and sustainment of enterprise business systems.

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a post-secondary degree in computer science, information systems or related field.  Three (3) years of professional experience in business solutions sustainment. Training in business analysis, project management, change management, and technical platforms, with certification considered an asset. Demonstrated skills in planning, implementing, configuring, sustaining, and improving business applications and services.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time Union position (35 hours per week). The (2024) rate of pay is $40.97 to $43.06 per hour. Special Projects Assistant - Solid Waste Services

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is seeking four (4) temporary full-time Special Projects Assistants in Solid Waste Services.

Reporting to the Manager, Solid Waste Services, the successful candidates will be responsible for assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, grant-funded activities, departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include two years in an undergraduate or college program in environmental practice, environmental protection, political science, public administration, business administration or a related local government program or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to write correspondence, research and prepare reports along with the capability to make effective presentations to a variety of audiences. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to positively contribute to a team environment are essential for this position.

POSITION DETAILS
These are temporary full-time (35 hours per week) Union Positions starting as soon as possible through to July 31, 2024. The (2024) rate of pay is $29.60 to $31.16 per hour, plus 12.4% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Summer Leaders

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking enthusiastic and experienced summer program leaders to deliver quality summer day camp experiences. There are up to 22 temporary summer leader positions available (position tiles are: Summer Leader 2 and Summer Leader 1) (see job description attached for full details). Camp locations include the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach and Electoral Areas E, F and G.

Summer Leaders are responsible for planning and leading inclusive summer recreation programs for children (pre-school to youth) and work as part of a unit of front-line program staff focused on positive behaviour support, social guidance, co-regulation, and personal care for children of all abilities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a high school diploma, a First Aid Certificate (Emergency, Standard or Emergency Childcare First Aid with CPR B or C), and a minimum of one (1) year of prior job-related experience working in a leadership role with children preferably in recreation. Class 4 Driver’s License preferred for Summer Leader 2.

POSITION DETAILS
These are temporary full-time and part-time (up to 40 hours per week) positions, from June 10 – August 30, 2024, with the possibility of ending early or of extension, based on the operational needs of the department. The (2024) rate of pay is $21.47-$26.26 per hour, plus 12.4% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays. Attendance of training scheduled Monday, June 10 - Friday, June 14, 2024, is mandatory.

These positions require some physical work; working outside with exposure to all types of weather conditions; and accompanying children in the water when swimming.

Lifeguard/Instructor II - Casual

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a Casual Lifeguard/Instructor Level II at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

The successful candidate will assist in the creation, planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs and special events. Duties include leading and instructing a variety water-based exercise classes (i.e., Aquafit), enforcing pool rules and pool safety for the public, routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, implementation of the facility’s emergency response program, providing first aid services and supporting office staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include high school graduation, with one (1) to three (3) years of pool/aquatic related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must possess and maintain the following certifications:

  • National Lifeguard Award (Pool Option)
  • Lifesaving Society (Swim for Life) Instructor Certification
  • CPR Certification - Basic Rescuer or CPR “C” & AED
  • Recognized First Aid Certification/WorkSafeBC Equivalency.
  • And any one of the following: Lifesaving Instructor, Aquafit Certification (BCRPA Aquafit, CALA Aquafit Instructor), National Lifeguard Service Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, or First Aid Instructor.

Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. General knowledge of office skills including keyboarding, word processing and knowledge of computer applications are also required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position. Hours of work vary and evening and weekend work will be required. The (2024) rate of pay is $26.32 to $27.70 per hour. As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking Casual Lifeguard/Instructors Level I

Mechanic (x3)

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is seeking three permanent full-time Mechanics working with Transit Operations in the Transportation Services Department.

The successful candidates will be responsible for vehicle and equipment repairs, including diagnosis and road testing, responding to roads calls for breakdowns or accidents, and the maintenance of records related to those repairs and servicing. Duties also include welding and fabricating, performing building maintenance and repairs, winterizing equipment such as towing and snow removal equipment, training of new staff, and other related duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess a high school diploma, plus a Red Seal trade qualification in Heavy-Duty, Truck and Transport or Automotive, and over three (3) years prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Consideration will only be made to automotive mechanics with their updated air-brake mechanics’ course. Authorized Inspector Certificate required or a requirement of employment to obtain within in the first 90 days worked. Good working knowledge of hydraulics, mobile equipment, standard bus electrical systems, air conditioning and multiplex wiring systems, as well as knowledge of safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures is also required. Familiarization with wheelchair lift/ramp and restraint system vehicles would also be an asset. In addition, incumbents must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.

POSITION DETAILS
These are permanent full-time (40 hours per week, variable shifts) Union positions. The (2024) rate of pay is $38.17 to $40.18 per hour. The positions offer an attractive benefits package as provided within the Collective Agreement between the RDN and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.
