Septic Systems in the RDN

Approximately 12,000 homes in the RDN use onsite systems, often septic systems, to treat wastewater. Properly functioning onsite systems are an effective wastewater treatment option. However, no system lasts forever and all require regular maintenance.

Onsite systems are privately owned leaving the homeowner in charge of arranging for maintenance, monitoring, inspection, and tank pump-out.

Onsite systems are regulated by the Ministry of Health and Vancouver Island Health Authority through the Sewerage System Regulation. Regulations require that you hire an "Authorized Person" for most work on your system.

The RDN's role in onsite systems is to deliver this SepticSmart program and to treat the septage at one of the two septage receiving sites in the Region.

If you have a failing onsite system, you may apply to the RDN for a temporary reduction in septage fees while you switch to pump and haul and have your onsite system repaired.
