Septic Systems in the RDN
Septic systems are an effective wastewater treatment option. However, septic systems are the responsibility of the homeowner, leaving them in charge of maintenance, monitoring and making appointments for inspection and pumping. An improperly maintained septic system can result in contaminated runoff entering nearby watersheds, which could eventually pollute adjacent wells and streams. The information on this website is designed to help you save money, protect the environment and ensure the health of yourself and others.
If you receive a bill for sewer services you most likely do not have your own septic system. If you do not receive a bill for sewer services, then maintenance, repair and inspection are the homeowner's responsibility.
The SepticSmart program offers a free household information kit and free workshops for residents. For a schedule of upcoming workshops, visit our workshops page. A household information kit on system maintenance is also available.

The RDN has created a SepticSmart Newsletter for rural residents on septic systems. The newsletter has been mailed out to residents and homeowners on Gabriola Island, and will be mailed out to more RDN rural residents in late 2010.

On May 31, 2005, the Sewage Disposal Regulation was repealed and replaced with the new Sewerage System Regulation. Only an authorized person can carry out maintenance, installation and site assessments on septic systems.
