RDN Continues to Move Forward to Waste Diversion Goal

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) continues to move towards a goal of 90% waste diversion in the current draft Solid Waste Management Plan. Increased organics diversion is essential to meet the target. As a result, on April 24, 2018 the RDN Board of Directors directed staff to proceed with an organic waste processing contract to Circular Waste British Columbia Inc., an amalgamation with Nanaimo Organic Waste Ltd. currently operating in Nanaimo.

Circular Waste brings over 20 years of proven success with organic diversion through their involvement in more than 100 compost facilities internationally. The amalgamation with Nanaimo Organic Waste Ltd. secures the capacity and permits to accept and process the volume of organic material to meet the RDN’s needs.

“We are pleased to be advancing towards our zero waste goal which the Regional District of Nanaimo initially set in 2002,” said RDN Chair Bill Veenhof. “A contract with Circular Waste provides security for organics waste processing critical to the success in achieving higher waste diversion.”

You can also continue to help us achieve increased waste diversion by checking out the What Goes Where? tool or the RDN Curbside app to find recycling facilities in the region. The app also allows you to set up curbside reminders for pick up and to receive notifications if there are collection disruptions.
