Update: RDN News Release - Fire Ban in Effect and Fire Services Resources

Update August 26, 2024: The campfire prohibition will be lifted in all regions of the Coastal Fire Centre area beginning 12 p.m., on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. This includes the use of tiki and similar kinds of torches and the use of chimineas. Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, including fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, burn cages and air curtain burners. These restrictions remain in place until October 31, 2024, or until the Order is rescinded.

Effective July 12, 2024, at noon, all open burning is banned throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN). The ban applies to open fires of any size, campfires, fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches, burn barrels and cages, binary exploding targets and chimineas (outdoor stoves that use wood as a fuel source). These bans apply to all public and private land and are in place until October 31, 2024, or until the order is rescinded by BC Wildfire Service.
